Duties:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive facility management plans to ensure the efficient operation and upkeep of zoo facilities.
  • Oversee all aspects of facility maintenance, including repairs, renovations, and preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Manage a team of maintenance staff, contractors, and vendors to execute maintenance tasks effectively and within budget.
  • Coordinate with other zoo departments to support their facility-related needs and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
  • Conduct regular inspections of zoo facilities to identify maintenance needs, safety hazards, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Develop and manage the facility budget, including forecasting expenses, tracking spending, and identifying cost-saving initiatives.
  • Procure and keep in stock necessary materials, equipment, and services for facility maintenance, repairs, and for animal keeper needs.
  • Implement sustainable practices and initiatives to minimize the zoo's environmental impact and promote conservation efforts.
  • Respond promptly to facility emergencies and coordinate with relevant managers to resolve issues efficiently.
  • Stay informed about industry best practices, emerging technologies, and regulatory requirements related to facility management and regulatory agencies we work with; Zoological Association of America, Global Humane, and USDA.
  • Assists in animal capture, transport, restraint, and chemical immobilization
  • Maintains proper storage of fuels, chemicals, and tools following OSHA standards.
  • Other duties as assigned; heavy emphasis on assisting with guest experience and animal care duties.

Qualifications:

Proven experience in facility management, preferably in a zoo or similar environment.

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, with team leadership experience and guest service experience.
  • Ability to operate a wide array of tools and heavy machinery/equipment; strong emphasis on tractor repair, skid steerer use, and utility vehicle repair.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • In-depth knowledge of facility maintenance practices, building systems, and regulatory requirements.
  • Proficiency in budget management, cost analysis, and procurement processes.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to collaborate across departments.
  • Demonstrated commitment to animal welfare, conservation, and environmental sustainability.
  • Understanding of ZAA, USDA, and OSHA standards, or willingness to learn upon hire
  • Proficiency in tracking and logging maintenance repairs
  • Proficiency with hand tools, lawn care devices, and troubleshooting issues with those items
  • Basic familiarity with pumps, HVAC, and electrical systems
  • Ability to learn front of house operations and basic animal care standards in coordination with the Director of Animal Welfare and Guest Services; Wiliness to aid in other areas as needed.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
