The Whitfield Collins Carnivore Intern is given the day to day responsibility of several groups of animals. These include, but are not limited to: Mexican wolves and red wolves. Some participation with husbandry of cheetah and black-footed cats is possible. Training will include (but not limited to):
- Diet preparation for multiple species
- Cleanliness and USDA requirements with our food preparation area
- General cleaning and maintenance of animal enclosures and grounds
- General monitoring of animal health and wellbeing
- General quarantine and zoonosis procedure
- Behavioral observations of the animals you work with
- Specific veterinary procedures (monthly deworming, fecal sample collection, administration of medications, etc.)
- Participation in enrichment projects and understanding natural behaviors
- Proper record keeping
- Understanding carnivore body condition scoring (BCS)
- Effective communication among your supervisors
- Understanding SSPs and Fossil Rim’s involvement in breeding programs
- Understanding management of recovery species for the American Red Wolf and Mexican Wolf
- Completion of independent project
- General understanding on food inventory and purchasing
Desired Experience, Capabilities and Educational Skills: Undergraduate degree in wildlife management, conservation biology, or a related scientific discipline attained prior to start of internship. Previous internships strongly recommended. You must also have a valid driver’s license.
Stipend/Housing: A $300/mo stipend (for expenses) and free onsite housing in a shared living environment is mandatory during your internship. If required, transportation to and from training area will be provided.
International students must have a J1 or B1 visa before arrival. Fossil Rim will not sponsor or assist with the visa process.
If selected, candidate must have a TB test conducted within 30 days prior to arrival for internship.
