Job Description: 

The zookeeper will be responsible for accomplishing animal care, exhibit maintenance, and coordination of the Educational Programs. This position requires an individual with a high degree of professional experience who takes pride in work well done. Must be a proven leader, team player, and team member. The priorities for this position include attention to animal care and health, fostering a positive team environment, and accomplishing an excellent guest experience.

 

Essential Job Functions

  • All team members must understand the significance of their role and how they can positively impact visitors. Pro-active, friendly communication will be expected at all times, as well as anticipating visitors’ needs and desires.

  • Provides for the needs of a wide range of mammals, birds, reptiles, and invertebrates through regular feedings, administering treatments as directed, exhibit maintenance and environmental enrichment programs for the species.

  • Input of data into the animal records databases; assures that appropriate records are kept on all husbandry including daily care and animal health

  • Exceptional use of time management techniques.

  • Keep all exhibit areas and off exhibit areas clean, neat and well organized.

  • Help train new employees to assure compliance with established standards and protocols.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  •  One year of professional experience at a public zoo, wildlife park, animal facility or similar institution and a demonstrated knowledge of zoological operations.

  • Associates degree

  • No legal state or federal convictions related to animals.

Other Requirements- Demonstrated ability to lead and work as a part of a team in a constantly changing environment as well as individually, with a minimum of supervision

A valid driver’s License with a good driving record

Ability to work a flexible schedule which includes evenings and/or weekends and holidays.

Ability to respond to emergencies on an on-call basis.

Language Skills- Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations.

Ability to write reports and business correspondence.

Abilities to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers and the general public.

Interpersonal Skills – friendly, positive attitude toward others. Ability to display servant based behaviors to include: being patient, kind, humble, respectful, selfless, forgiving, honest and committed.

Guest/Customer Service Skills— must have knowledge of principles for providing quality customer service. This includes understanding guest needs, meeting quality standards for service and guest satisfaction.

Physical Demands- Must be able to work outdoors in any weather, lift 25 pounds, walk briskly or run if needed. Must be able to move heavier items with assistance and do repetitive physical work such as raking and shoveling.

Work Environment- Mostly outdoors in all weather. Some areas such as the reptile area are hot and humid. Must be able to handle or be near any animal in the collection. Will be exposed to several outdoor allergens such as dust and hay.

Computer Skills- Must have working knowledge of Microsoft based office programs (Excel, Word, Outlook)

Public Presentation- Must be able to present to small and large crowds and work well with large groups of children.

Pay: $18.00 - $21.00 per hour

Schedule: Usually a 5-day work week, often requiring flexibility and ability to work weekends and holidays. Irregular scheduling in which days may exceed 8 hours. Work both weekend days in a 5-day per week schedule with two days off in a row. Work holidays (schedule to be determined within department) with consideration given consistent with company leave policy
